Outdoor Lighting

As LED lighting continues to expand to take the place of traditional halide or incandescent lights, complementing technologies are being developed to maximize the efficiency of the new lighting solutions. While indoor lights have a relatively stable operating environment, outdoor lights have to take a lot of punishment while still being just as, if not more reliable than indoor lighting.

Protechnic has developed active cooling modules that excel at providing long-lasting, reliable performance in even the harshest of environments. From scorching desert heats, to frigid arctic temperatures, Protechnic active cooling will extend the life of your outdoor lighting and increasing the amount of lumens the LEDs can produce.

For the most extreme environment applications, there can be no better choice than a Protechnic IP68 fan to cool your LED lights. A Protechnic IP68 fan is:

Completely water and dust-proof. The proprietary design produces a positive pressure seal, actively repelling foreign objects.

Salt mist resistant. Protechnic IP68 fans have been tested by running for months in a misting chamber, with no loss of performance, according to the GR487 standard. Completely submersible. Tested to over a depth of 1 meter.

Another major advantage of switching to active cooling over passive cooling is the massive reduction in the size of the heat sink. LEDs operate best when kept cooled, and the major limiting factor for any LED array is heat; LEDs can actually produce more (sometimes much more) light than typically seen. The reason this is not done is because the increased heat can drastically shorten the lifespan of the LED. However, with a Protechnic cooling module attached, the extra heat is dissipated without harming the delicate LED, resulting in a longer operating life, or higher lumen output without shortening the operational life.

A recently completed Protechnic LED cooling project demonstrates beyond a doubt the advantages that come with using an active cooling module:

  • Unit cost was reduced from $41.67 each to $32.62, with the cooling fan integrated into the lamp for a 150w streetlight.

  • Heatsink weight was reduced from 5000 grams to 3000 grams, for the
    same 150w streetlight.

  • Size of the heatsink was reduced to less than 60% of original size.
